Meditations of the heart thurman6/10/2023 The meditations discuss solitude and introspection, life with one's fellows, and coming to realize the unity of one's self and all beings with God. The meditations are divided into five groups, titled "The Inward Sea","The Binding Ties", "Life is Alive", "The Moment of Celebration" and "Meditations of the Heart" with each group prefaced by a brief introduction. Their purpose is to focus the mind and the heart upon God as the Eternal Source and Goal of life." They are needs that are universal and in which all men share. Thurman tried to address his thoughts "to some of the deep and insistent needs of the human spirit, which needs know no age, clime, culture or group. In a brief Foreword, Thurman writes that "there is no underlying theme" holding the various meditations together. This is a moving at times difficult collection that shows a deep sincerity in the religious search and in the attempt to know God or the divine. Thurman published three volumes of short meditations and talks that he delivered during his years at the Fellowship Church, including this second volume "Meditations of the Heart". It welcomed people of all racial, cultural, economic, and religious backgrounds. From 1944 - 1952, Thurman served as pastor of the Church for the Fellowship of All Peoples in San Francisco, the first ecumenical church in the United States. I have been learning a great deal from reading works by and about him. Howard Thurman (1899 - 1981) was a mystic, preacher, civil rights leader, and philosopher.

Off armageddon reef6/10/2023 On that note - the next few books look like they're. That being said, I skimmed the series' description on Wikipedia, and it's unclear if they ever come back. Their lack of technological advancement is an interesting subject to explore, vaguely reminding me of the Yuuzhan Vong Star Wars novels. The Gbaba definitely seem like a cool adversary. not much more? Given that Merlin apparently has the complete history of Earth at his disposal, and is using it for reference, I wouldn't have minded a few more allusions. There're passing references to the Battle of Trafalgar, King Henry VIII, Martin Luther and. As someone whose knowledge of martial sailing is pretty much limited to Master and Commander, I found myself lost at times trying to figure out what and where things on a ship were.Ī few more historical references would also have been appreciated, just to give some help 'framing' the scenes. On that point, though, I almost wish he spent a bit more time explaining some of the tech and terminology. This book reads like a Tom Clancy novel of the Age of Sail at times. I should qualify that I've previously read the first half-dozen or so of the Honorverse series so I'm definitely familiar with Weber's style and subject matter. So I just finished reading a hardcover edition of Off Armageddon Reef and wanted to organize my thoughts and questions about whether to continue reading the series. This House Is Haunted by John Boyne6/10/2023 Later that night in her room, another terrifying experience further reinforces the sense that something is very wrong.įrom the moment Eliza rises the following morning, her every step seems dogged by a malign presence that lives within Gaudlin’s walls. This House Is Haunted is a striking homage to the classic nineteenth-century ghost story. “A wonderfully creepy novel…magnificently eerie.” - The Observer A Dickensian ghost story from the bestselling author of The Heart’s Invisible Furies and A Ladder to the Sky John bogle common sense investing6/10/2023 This tenth anniversary edition includes updated data and new information but maintains the same long-term perspective as in its predecessor.īogle has also added two new chapters designed to provide further guidance to investors: one on asset allocation, the other on retirement investing.Ī portfolio focused on index funds is the only investment that effectively guarantees your fair share of stock market returns. The best-selling investing "bible" offers new information, new insights, and new perspectives The thin man novel6/10/2023 The careful reader can pick up the clues, but the puzzle of what happened to Wynant and how the killer hid the crimes is a neat one. The mystery is intriguing and its solution isn’t obvious. In fact, the only genuine bond in the novel is between Nick and Nora. There’s also the cynicism. The characters are not at all trusting of each other and for good reason. Nick is neither stupid nor shallow, and he’s not especially impulsive, but neither is he reflective or introspective. There’s also the fast pace and action that’s often associated with hardboiled novels. It’s not gratuitous, but there are fistfights and shooting, and Nick Charles has to battle his way out of a few situations. So as you can imagine, violence is a part of this story. This is a hardboiled novel (although it isn’t nearly as gritty as some entries in that genre). In the end, and after another death, he finds out what happened to Claude Wynant and how that ties in with Julia Wolf’s murder and the other murder. Even Nick Charles comes under suspicion, mostly because his and Nora’s place in New York seems to become a gathering place for all of the other suspects. With the case not seeming to go away, Nick Charles has no choice but to get involved, and starts to put the pieces together. There are also some shady associations in Wynant’s past and they, too, might have had their reasons for committing murder. Wynant’s children Gil and Dorothy may also have had their reasons for committing the murder. And then there’s Wynant’s greedy ex-wife Mimi Jorgensen. This was so good that I didn’t want it to end. The making of a manager6/9/2023 We now regularly have a weekly team standup.I now do regular 1:1 meetings with each team member. How my life / behaviour / thoughts / ideas have changed as a result of reading the book. If you like the idea of one day starting a business, don’t read this book yet – wait until you’ve got a business already, and you’re at the point where you’re needing to hire people to help it grow. If you’re not yet a manager of people, there’s probably not much point in you reading this. If you’re a very experienced manager, you should still read it because you might pick up some tips. If you’re a manager of people, you should definitely read this, especially if you’re new to the job. I learned so much about being a manager, and my management skills (and our team’s effectiveness and happiness) immediately improved after I started to do some of the things that Julie recommends. One of my most highlighted books of all time. This book is a must-read guide to being a good manager.Management is really a matter of purpose, people and process.Being a good manager is hard, and scary, but a very learnable skill. Distinction a social critique of the judgement of taste-Inequality Classic Readings in Race, Class, and Gender. Journalism University, 2010(2):12.īourdieu P. New Media Use and Subjective Class Identity: Theoretical Explanation and Empirical Test. Media and Class Formation: Media Class Differentiation under the Contempt Chain. Huaxi Securities, Bilibili (SW-9626.HK) Research Report, 2022. This article will use Bourdieu's distinction theory to analyze the distinction among China's Internet platforms, which reveals there is a symbolic struggle of social classes on the Internet. From Bourdieu's perspective, it can be found that each Internet platform has a particular culture corresponding to the tastes of a particular social class, which is a distinction. The Internet has been developed for decades and has formed a rich Internet culture, the newest form of culture people also have different tastes in it, which is still because they belong to different social classes, comparing the long-length video platform represented by Bilibili and the short-length video platform represented by Tiktok and Kwai, the differences in their user groups are not just a commercial phenomenon. The distinction is presented as people from different social classes having a different judgments of taste in art forms such as music, photography, and movies. AbstractĪs long as there is culture, there is a Distinction. Book the ghost map6/9/2023 But I generally enjoyed reading this book. To be honest, the book felt rather longwinded in parts, especially since it has the tendency to digress to other topics (about miasma theory, especially). Through this account, the book manages to give the reader a general introduction to who John Snow is, including his work with anaesthesia, as well as why the discovery of water contamination and its relationship to cholera was so important for cities to continue growing without large numbers of deaths. Told in seven chapters, each one representing a day, The Ghost Map presents a detailed and sometimes wandering account of how John Snow conducted his investigations. The Ghost Map is an account of the John Snow and to a lesser extent, Henry Whitehead’s investigations into a series of chlorea cases (the 1854 Broad Street Chlorea Outbreak) that led to the discovery of a contaminated pump and the dismantling of the miasma theory. One particular household’s waste, in particular, is thrown out and lands near a certain pump. However, this effort does have some cracks and not all waste is gotten rid of. Almost miraculously, a group of people have organised themselves into a class of scavengers, taking on the responsibility of most modern sanitation departments and thus helping two million people get rid of their waste. It’s the mid-19th century and London is a city. |
